Dialogue that goes nowhere and gets there very slowly

-What’re you thinking about?

-Nothing.

-Some big thoughts you have there.

-We all do what we can do. Isn’t that the story of the world?

-The world? Now you speak for the world? You have nothing to say for yourself, and you place the crown on your head and speak for the world? What is the world coming to?

-I didn’t say I spoke for the world. I only said that the world for the most part thinks of nothing. Besides what’s with the third degree? I said I had nothing on my mind and you attack me for it. It’s enough to drive a woman mad.

-Oh. Sorry about that.

-It’s okay. I’m a bit antsy myself.

-Nervous about tonight?

-You can say that.

-Then there was something on your mind.

-Can you drop it? When you ask, what are you thinking about, you’re really asking do I want to talk about something. When I say nothing, it means I don’t. It doesn’t mean I’m not thinking about anything, or that I don’t want to talk about what I’m thinking about a later time. You have to get over yourself.

-I get it, I get it. I’m a bad person. Do you want to talk about tonight?

-Not really. It’ll be what it’ll be. The most I can hope for is to end up no worse off than I am right now.

-That’s not a very positive attitude about this whole thing. If you think happy thoughts, happy happenings will happen for you.

-Do you even listen to yourself when you talk?

-Not always.

-You should start. You may be amazed what a little listening will do for that filter that stops you from saying dumb things.

-If I left that filter on all the time I would never say anything.

-My point exactly.

-You must be very nervous. Attacking me where I sleep. That’s not like you.

-You’re a big boy. I’m sure you’ll get over it.
